Automatic Screwdriving Module Is Safe for Battery Assembly

Automatic screwdriving modules are available in various configurations to meet the needs of any application. Compact, robust and simple connection ports facilitate integration into automated assembly systems. Each screwdriving spindle is equipped with a quick-change chuck.

The newest module has been designed specifically for assembling electric vehicle batteries. It is equipped with special ceramic and synthetic parts to electrically isolate the driver and protect against voltages of up to 1,000 volts. Available in single or multispindle versions, the module has special gripper jaws to avoid dropping the screw onto the workpiece and causing a short circuit.

A gentle screwfeeder and a vacuum port at the drive head keep particulates out of the assembly. The module meets ISO 6469-3 and DIN EN IEC 60900 requirements for electrical safety.

Sealant Is Ideal for Automotive CMOS Sensors

Dualbond EG6290 is a new sealant for CMOS image sensors, which are often used in driver monitoring systems. The adhesive was designed for the glass-on-die assembly method. The glass filter is fixed directly onto the chip, as is typical with iBGA image sensor packaging.

Compared to previous products, the material has a significantly higher Young’s modulus of 2,350 megapascals and a significantly higher adhesion value. With a glass transition temperature of more than 130 C, the adhesive exhibits mechanically consistent behavior—even at high application temperatures—and can compensate for temperature-dependent pressure changes. The material meets the requirements of the AEC-Q100 Grade 2 automotive standard.

The adhesive is applied via needle dispensing. Thanks to its high thixotropy index, narrow and high bond lines can be precisely dispensed, onto which the glass filter is then joined.

Ultrasonic Welder Assembles EV Batteries

The Branson GMX-HP ultrasonic metal welder offers greater power and downforce, which is essential for larger welds required for electric vehicle batteries. It features a high-capacity 8-kilowatt, 20-kilohertz power supply. Welding power is transmitted through a direct-press actuator, equipped with dual linear bearing guides, precision distance sensors and a dynamic pressure trigger that deliver greater part-holding downforce with the high stability needed for repeatable weld quality.

These characteristics enable the machine to weld the larger-diameter conductors, terminations and bus bars used in EVs. The welder is also able to bond the thicker stacks of anode and cathode films used in high-powered batteries.

Programmable digital controls can manage the welding process in multiple modes, including time, energy, peak power and distance. These modes provide the precision required to maintain tight process control despite variations in surface quality or cleanliness of the parts.

Semiautomatic Work Cells Enable Radial Riveting

Standardized semiautomatic lean cells are equipped with a radial riveter, a process control system, and either a rotary indexing table or a belt transfer system. The former includes a safety enclosure; a rotary table 870 millimeters in diameter; and a riveter that can move 200 millimeters on the X axis and 300 millimeters on the Y axis. The latter has a custom belt-transfer system and workpiece holder instead of a rotary table.

These systems can double or triple throughput even with small to medium runs. Four riveting units are available, depending on the force required for the application. An optional proportional valve technique enables the cells to handle rivets of different sizes and materials in the same workpiece.

Both machines include process monitoring. Equipped with a USB interface and a 5.7-inch, backlit, LED touch-screen, the controller can store 63 riveting programs. Engineers can program six control parameters and 45 riveting modes.
